AGRICULTURE
Our agricultural initiatives are central to the Buy a Brick Foundation’s mission of empowering rural communities in Zimbabwe. Among these initiatives, our community gardens are pivotal in fostering self-sufficiency and resilience. With the support of the government authorities and local communities, we have implemented gardens, water pumps, and agricultural innovations across more than 20 villages in Zimbabwe, feeding over 12,000 individuals.
Monde, our pioneering community garden, was established in a village outside Victoria Falls that faced significant agricultural challenges. As one of the first gardens in our program, Monde has been instrumental in promoting year-round crop rotation, providing essential resources for sustainable farming. The garden, which has already undergone one expansion, is set to grow further as more community members participate in its development. Other villages with our community garden projects include BH25, Chidobe, Chikandaweube, Bethesda, Ndlovu,Matetsi, BH33, Maphulcalu, Nynogolu.
Centering Sustainability: Victoria Falls Growers Association 4 Rural Development
Vitoria Falls Growers Association 4 Rural Development (VFGA) was created to ensure the long-term local-led sustainability of our community garden projects. By serving as a link between the hospitality industry in Victoria Falls and rural gardens, VFGA promotes the production and consumption of local produce and allows locals to benefit collectively from their community gardens year-round. To learn more about how this process works and to see the work coming from Zimbabweans on the ground leading VFGA, visit their website below.
Empowering Communities Through Climate Response Initiatives
In response to recurring drought conditions the past four years, we have also implemented several key initiatives, including:
Drilling and Solar-Powering Boreholes: To address water scarcity, we have initiated well drilling and installed solar-powered boreholes, ensuring reliable water sources for our community gardens.
Agricultural Equipment: With the help of donors, the Buy a Brick Foundation invested in new agricultural equipment to streamline agricultural work in the gardens.
Government Engagement: The Buy a Brick Foundation has strengthened our relationships and opened new avenues for collaboration with Zimbabwean officials, including from the Ministry of Agriculture and other government delegates
