Education

Chimbombo Primary School

August 31, 2012

Chimbombo Primary School was chosen as our fourth school project. The decision was easy, The Zimbabwe Ministry of Education contacted us and asked for our assistance. Chimbombo was in desperate need of a new school building. They had two existing buildings, both built back in the 1950's; one was in ok shape the other had been condemned by the Zimbabwe Government, but, it was still being used every day as students needed a place to escape from the blazing hot sun. Here's the very scary truth...two months after we completed the new school block the old condemned school block fell in during a wind storm. Thankfully, no one was in that building, but, they could have been had the new school block not been built.  While working at Chimbombo, we built a new outside kitchen, bath houses and toilets. We had beds made as the teachers were sleeping on the floor. Think about this; you're a teacher, in an African bush school and it's pitch black by 6:30pm each night. You have no electricity, you're an hour and a half from Victoria Falls by car but no one has one. Every teacher living in the teachers quarters burned their last candles a week before. This isn't a made up story, but a real life scenario that takes place out in the bush on a daily basis.

Have you thanked a teacher today? These teachers need to be hugged every day for the commitment that they give to their communities.

Knowing the facts about the teacher's living quarters and no electricity, we immediately jumped into action. We traveled into the bordering country of  Botswana where we bought electrical supplies to power the teacher's quarters. Zesa (Zimbabwe Electric Supply Authority) turned on the power to the teachers quarters within a week. Oh happy days at Chimbombo.
